The Guardians of History Fire Back Against Another America-Hating Leftist

In the article, “Founders Would Be Horrified: Renowned Historian Drops Truth-Bomb On American Revolution And Lessons For Today”, Professor Marc Egnal of York University in Canada purports to reveal the “real reasons” for the American Revolution.  It wasn’t liberty, mind you, it was “territorial and economic expansion” - in a word, imperialism! Oh, no!  Egnal would have you believe ordinary people willingly sacrificed their lives for the “economic interests, territorial ambitions, and entrenched inequalities” of their colonialist overlords.  Sure.

Egnal puts a Marxist spin on the unremarkable fact that a sizeable percentage of the American population were Tory Loyalists who favored the British.  In Egnal’s world, this morphs into the assertion “the less wealthy populations in areas like upstate New York and the backcountry of the Carolinas often sided with the Tories and opposed the Patriots.”

Later, he trashes the Founders, then turns around and enlists their aid in trashing Trump:  “How does this connect to the present? I think the founders would be somewhat horrified by the idea of a president who cowed the legislature, made legislators take a loyalty test, and basically neutered the ability of the legislature to be a check on the president.”  Sorry, fella, can’t have it both ways.

But he’s not done trashing today’s America:  “Racism is still present in today’s government—and so is an aggressive foreign policy, which continues as part of the expansionist mindset.”  So claims Egnal, who is way down the anti-colonialist rabbit hole.

Bottom line:  The article is just more anti-colonialist Marxist claptrap from an admitted devotee of the avowed Marxist Howard Zinn.

More from the Guardians:
  • The article was published by the Institute for New Economic Thinking, a leftist organization that trashes free markets, obsesses over economic inequality, and endorses divisive identity politics.  The Institute launched with an initial pledge of $50 million from its co-founder George Soros.  With a pedigree like that, what could possibly go wrong?
  • Egnal’s views are expressly interwoven with the narrative of Howard Zinn whose work can be summed up in one phrase: America is just no darn good.  The problem is, Howard Zinn was an avowed Marxist.  Howard Zinn said he was “something of an anarchist, something of a socialist.  Maybe a democratic socialist” and “Yes, I’m something of a Marxist.”  So you can skip the article with Egnal and go straight to Zinn’s undeservedly influential and error-ridden People’s History of the United States.
  • As for the Founders being horrified by Trump:
    • President Trump has in no way “cowed the legislature,” nor “made legislators take a loyalty test.”  In fact, the Congress has defied the President with several Republicans blocking his nominees and his agenda.
    • Congress has yet to codify most of Trump’s America First agenda, so, it doesn’t look like a legislature that has taken a loyalty test whatsoever.
    • The Federal Judiciary has actually engaged in extra-constitutional judicial tyranny against the Executive branch with its incessant injunctions undermining President Trump’s authority. The Founders would be horrified by the overreach by the judiciary – the branch that they intended to be the least powerful.  The Anti-Federalists warned about judicial tyranny.
  • Egnal states: "The Revolution advanced freedom in the northern states, but it also solidified the U.S. as a slave-holding nation. Slavery and racism were embedded in the Constitution." - Wrong. Even a hard left site like racism.org acknowledges that the words "slave" or "slavery" appear nowhere in the Constitution.
  • Egnal: "Racism is still present in today’s government—and so is an aggressive foreign policy, which continues as part of the expansionist mindset." - Huge if true. Egnal makes a huge accusation and offers not even the slightest shred of evidence.  Sorry, articles of faith don’t cut it.
  • Finally, "And that’s resistance – resistance to racial oppression, to imperialism, and to tyranny." - Correct, but not how Egnal thinks. President Trump was elected to fight against these wrongs, and despite the resistance of Democrats who support them, Americans are still supporting President Trump.
