Letter to Activists Who Want a Slavery Exhibit Near Independence Hall to ‘Tell the Whole Story’ – We Agree
January 2026

It has come to our attention that a number of historians, community leaders, activists and Philadelphians have been fighting to oppose potential changes to an exhibit on slavery during George Washington’s presidency that is under federal jurisdiction.

The exhibit is at the President’s House Site near Independence Hall in Independence National Historic Park in downtown Philadelphia.

A Trump executive order directed the National Park Service to remove public exhibits that “inappropriately disparage Americans past or living” before the America 250 celebration in July.  The order cited the promotion of “corrosive ideology” at Independence Park.

Last August, protesters called for the exhibit to remain unchanged.

We were particularly moved by Michelle Flamer from Avenging the Ancestors Coalition and the President’s House Steering Committee, who stressed "how important it is that the entirety of our story of history is told."

We agree completely, and in the interest of truly encompassing the entirety of history, we ask that Michelle Flamer and the other protesters demand the following additions to the exhibit, specifically how the legacy of slavery still looms over America today:
  • America's last presidential election had one of its two major parties ignore the primary voters by installing a candidate whose family profited from slavery
  • Regrettably, 75 million Americans chose to vote for the candidate with slavery in her family history
  • Even with the focus on America's history of slavery, there are more slaves in the world today than any time in history
  • Case in point: ICE rescuing children from forced labor and sex trafficking

We look forward to hearing from you how you will use our feedback to make the exhibit more inclusive in your efforts to tell the entirety of our story.

[Editor’s Note – No changes have been made to the exhibit as of December 21, 2025.]

Thanks,
