Liberals Say the Darndest Things (Booth Truth)
Booth Truth Update 8/24/19 - ‘U.K.’s National Health Service Can Never Run Out of Money’
Someone from the U.K. visited our booth at the Irish Festival in Alexandria, Virginia and claimed that the U.K.’s National Health Service (single payer system) is not running out of money. We promised to show him news stories within the last year to the effect the NHS is going broke. Here are just a few (there are many more):
If it comforts you, go right on believing the NHS has bottomless pits of money at its disposal, but don’t foist an obviously broken and bankrupt system on America.
Update 11/9/18 – ‘Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is not a socialist’
Someone stopped by our table at the Fredericksburg, Virginia gun show recently and was all upset when we asserted that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a socialist. He said, ‘she’s a progressive Democrat, not a socialist.’
Sure, and I’m the tooth fairy. We need go no further than the newly elected Congresswoman’s Wikipedia page: “Ocasio-Cortez is a self-described democratic socialist.” Case closed.
2018 Irish Festival
Potomac Tea Party engaged the public at a booth at the Irish Festival in Alexandria, Virginia on August 25, 2018. We received our usual share of abuse from ill-mannered and ill-behaved liberals, but that’s par for the course – we’re used to it.
We also met a young person who has just walked away from liberalism and the Democratic Party, joining 176,000 others who have done so in recent weeks. He walked away when his friends started calling Trump a fascist. If Trump were a fascist, he reasoned, Trump would be shutting down newspapers and throwing people in jail. That’s obviously not the case, so the accusation is completely bogus. Good for this young man using his noodle. If only more people would think for themselves, the world would be a better place.
Also during the day, we heard liberals say the darndest things:

That’s obviously not the case, so the accusation is completely bogus. Good for this young man using his noodle. If only more people would think for themselves, the world would be a better place.
Also during the day, we heard liberals say the darndest things:
- We asked one young man, “Would you like a Constitution?” “No,” he answered. “I’m not a conservative.” The Constitution is for all Americans, not just conservatives.
- “The Constitution can’t handle today’s questions. It doesn’t mention iPhones.” The Constitution addresses eternal questions like preventing tyranny and the concentration of too much power in too few hands. It accommodates mere technological and social change just fine. The New York Times doesn’t have any trouble asserting freedom of the press even though it no longer writes with quill pens.
- “There is no liberal bias in the media.” We have collected two dozen admissions by journalists themselves that the mainstream media is indeed biased. Admissions are the strongest evidence one can present in court. Here are just three admissions; we’ll save the rest for anyone who wants to debate us about liberal bias in the media. We’ll debate you anytime, anywhere.
- A Washington Post writer commented, "Too often we wear our liberalism on our sleeve and are intolerant of other lifestyles and opinions. I've been in communal gatherings at the Post, watching election returns, and have been flabbergasted to see my colleagues
cheer unabashedly for the Democrats."
(August 2013 – U.K. Telegraph) - An MSNBC host asked journalist Glenn Greenwald to respond to critics who claim he’s become a spokesman for Edward Snowden. Greenwald’s response: ‘Every journalist has an agenda. We’re on MSNBC now, where close to 24 hours a day the agenda of President Obama and the Democratic Party are promoted, defended, glorified. The agenda of the Republican Party is undermined...Sure, I do defend [Snowden], just like people on MSNBC defend President Obama and his officials and Democratic Party leaders 24 hours a day.’”
(December 2013 – Accuracy in Media) - “[Politico’s Chief White House Correspondent Mike Allen asked a panel of reporters], ‘Does the media lean left,’...All four panelists replied, ‘Yes...’ In an effort to explain their one-word responses, they all swept over the same terrain – that Washington journalists need to get out of town and talk to real people, have real world experiences, acquire a few evangelical relatives and work a minimum wage job at some point in their lives…[One panelist, NYT’s Mark Leibovich, stated that], “One of the many reasons [the media is] seen as being out of touch with the rest of the country is the group think that goes on here.”
(December2013 - Daily Caller)
- A Washington Post writer commented, "Too often we wear our liberalism on our sleeve and are intolerant of other lifestyles and opinions. I've been in communal gatherings at the Post, watching election returns, and have been flabbergasted to see my colleagues
- “You’re a bunch of simpletons.” Let’s see if we have this straight: the liberals’ answer to everything is bigger, more intrusive government, and we’re the simpletons? Sure.
- “We have a lot of things in this country you would call socialist.” Maybe, but that’s no excuse for going further down the socialist road or arriving at full-blown socialism. Wrong direction.
- “More people are prosperous because of the socialist things we have in this country.” Let’s be clear: The government does not create wealth. It only redistributes wealth. You can’t redistribute what hasn’t been created. A welfare check does not make you prosperous; that’s delusional. If you like social spending, you need to support the wealth creation of the free market capitalist system that underpins it. You can’t name a single socialist project that hasn’t been subsidized in some way from external sources, from New Harmony to the Israeli kibbutz.
- “Catastrophic insurance did not pay large medical bills.” What an outlandish claim! A PTP member had catastrophic insurance and was very happy with it for 30 years until Obamacare came along and destroyed it. The insurer paid every claim that was presented.
- “Single payer is the only answer to the preexisting conditions problem.” Another delusional outlandish claim. Obamacare had another answer – albeit a bad one – guaranteed issue. Before Obamacare, 36 states had high risk pools. Some worked better than others, but the point is they could be made to work well. The people in Kansas were very happy with theirs. But Obamacare destroyed them. State reinsurance programs, cropping up again, are yet another answer to the preexisting conditions problem. Still another answer is preexisting conditions insurance, an innovation of the free market. A complete government takeover like single payer is obviously not necessary to solve this problem.
- “We need a national integrated health system.” The person who said this is a nurse who dismissed anything we had to say because we are not medical professionals. But as the saying goes, ‘I may not be a chicken, but I know more about ovaries than any damn chicken does.’ There is nothing in medical training that makes good public policy the exclusive province of medical professionals – that’s crazy. This person left abruptly and did not explain what they meant by the term. A quick Google search shows the term refers to many different things, including systems in other countries. To the extent that the term is cover for single payer or further moves in the direction of government control over healthcare, count on us to oppose it. As the Obamacare Truth Squad puts it, “the construction of a humane healthcare system lies in the direction of less government intervention, not more.”
