Enough with the Government Dependency, Already!

Virginia State Senator Bill Stanley took to the floor recently, to declare independence from proposed Medicaid expansion and government welfare more generally. He talked about how 30 percent of his district – distressed former coal and tobacco country in southern Virginia - is already on Medicaid. So he knows all about its low-quality care and the fact that many doctors won’t take it. But his larger point was about government dependency in general. “We have too much of it,” Stanley told the chamber, and it’s brought “poverty, despair, and addiction in our areas.” His region used to have the lowest unemployment rate in the state; now it’s the highest, thanks to government policies. Government tore down the economy and replaced it with displaced worker assistance and other types of welfare benefits. The result is a shrinking population, opioid addiction, and doctors moving away. Instead of Medicaid expansion, give us our pride and independence back, Stanley said. He wants state policies that will produce jobs and economic revitalization, not more handouts. Like Ronald Reagan said, “The best possible social program is a job.”
